This spectacular event takes place on Saturday 24 th of July 2010 at Lakeside Doncaster. The organisers (Doncaster Tourism, the council's tourism team, and Doncaster St George’s Rotary Club) are looking for a number of crews, companies and organisations who would like to battle it out in 30ft brightly painted dragon boats over the 200m course. This event is an excellent opportunity for companies, clubs and organisations to take part in a professionally managed, fun packed and action filled day with the potential to raise £1,000’s for the local Rotary Club Charities Each crew is made up of 10 paddlers, a beating drummer at the front of the boat, and a steering helm at the tail end (the steering helm is provided by the event organiser) The event company who will run this event have over 15years experience in staging this type of event and is the only commercial dragon boat event operator recognised and approved by the British Dragon Boat Racing Association. Crew members do not need any previous experience as training is provided on the day. Organisations can enter as many crews as they wish in what is a great team building event, and a great way to promote your company or organisation. Each crew have a minimum of three races with the top three teams receiving a set of engraved medals on colour ribbons and a unique Perspex model dragon boat or mounted ceramic dragon for the overall winners. As well as the Dragon Boat Racing there will be other activities at Lakeside as part of a fun-filled family day. The Lighting the Flame 2010 is taking place between 10am and 2pm and is part of the national 2012 Open Weekend, celebrating two years to go until the London Olympics. The event is an opportunity for residents to meet local clubs and find out what they can offer. As part of the day there will be hockey, football, rugby, tennis and dance demonstrations. Other planned activities include sumo suit wrestling, an inflatable football challenge, South Yorkshire track and field event and performance arts. There will also be a children’s fun fair, arts and crafts, world foods, coffee cart, ice-cream and fund raising stalls.
The Lakeside Village Outlet is also holding a Chinese themed family fun day with dragon dancers and children’s activities. If you would like to take part the entry fee is £350 per crew (hopefully paid for by the organisation) and each crew member is expected to raise a minimum of £30 in sponsorship for the charities.
