April to June 2008

Throughout the year, Doncaster Council runs a series of varied events exploring Doncaster's countryside, wildlife and heritage. We offer activities for all ages and interests, including guided walks, children's events, family outings, stories, wildlife events, Doncaster Country Fair and more. So find an event that suits you, come along and enjoy yourself!

And remember when you arrive at an activity, look out for the Council's experienced activity leaders - whatever the weather, they'll be there!

Friends of Sandall Beat Wood
Every Thursday, 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Saturday 19 April, 9:30am - 3:00pm

Friends are local volunteers who help to manage the Beat. Today's session will be an off-site visit - please phone for details and to book your place on the minibus. Membership open to all aged over 16 years. Meet at Sandall Beat Community Environment Centre, Sandall Beat Wood, off Leger Way.

Maps and Compasses
Saturday 19 April, 10:00am - 3:00pm
Join us for a day's workshop on map reading and use of a compass, to give you confidence when you're walking hills and dales, peaks and valleys. Please telephone 01302 300798 to book your place. Junior Rangers

Fun activities every month for 8 - 11 year olds who are interested in wildlife and the environment, from pond dipping and minibeast hunts to games and crafts.  Membership needed but free. Please phone 01302 300798 to join.

Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
Sunday 20 April, 10:30am - 12:30pm
Come along and meet the RSPB for a birdsong walk around Sandall Beat Local Nature Reserve.  If you have binoculars and field guides please bring them along.  Meet at Sandall Beat Community Environment Centre.

Walks for Women - Barnburgh / Harlington Stroll (5 miles)
Saturday 26 April, 10:30am - 12:30pm
A stroll starting at Barnburgh, through High Melton and Harlington, then back along the Trans Pennine Trail - the views are spectacular. Optional pub lunch available after the walk. Meet at The Crown public house, Barnburgh. Map Ref: 489028

Walk for Life (4 miles)

Join us on this short, scenic, fun walk to raise funds for the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal.  £5.00 per entry.  Please phone 01709 582244 to get your registration form. In partnership with Mexborough Community Partnership. Meet at the Pastures Garden Centre, Pastures Road, Mexborough.

A Wander Through Time (4 miles)

Mystical Moth Night
Saturday 21 June, 9:30pm - 11:00pm
A fantastic opportunity to see the beautiful night-flying moths of Sandall Beat. In partnership with Doncaster Council, Doncaster Naturalists will be your guides for the night. Limited numbers - please phone to book your place. Please bring warm clothing, insect repellent and a torch - the Wood is cold and very dark at night, even in the summer. Community Environment Centre Open Day - March of the Scarecrows
