The floral displays that grace the approaches into Doncaster, the town centre itself and many of the surrounding villages attract visitors from far and wide. The stunning floral creations are part of Doncaster’s participation in the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom Competition which has resulted in the town winning medals, shields and trophies for the imaginative planting of trees, shrubs, flowers, landscaping, conservation and recycling in recent years.
The floral decorations that Doncaster produces for the Yorkshire in Bloom and Britain in Bloom competitions are installed and maintained by Community First and the support of commercial sponsorship has helped the town to achieve two first place positions in Yorkshire in Bloom in 2003 and 2004.
Each year, Doncaster Council, the town’s businesses, community groups and local schools work together to surpass the previous year’s entries and delight visitors and residents alike. 2004 saw a 3 metre high floral Jonny Wilkinson commemorating the Rugby World Cup achievements and other memorable creations have included The Mayflower Ship, The Mallard, St George and the Dragon and a display of 6 Vulcan Bombers, each chosen for their association with the town. Visitors in 2005 will see a new range of topiary figures and Robin Hood will naturally be among these.
