The reserve, located alongside the River Don in the spectacular Don Gorge, comprises a large area of open water created by mining subsidence along with areas of broadleaved woodland and grassland which are particularly rich in plants. Bird life is prolific with over 60 regular breeding species. Several permissive and public footpaths give excellent access to the reserve and there are three viewing hides, two of which are available for wheel chair users. Food and drinks can be obtained from the Boat Inn public house adjacent to the car park. Location
The reserve is accessed from Nursery Lane, Sprotbrough. From Warmsworth, leave the A630 on Mill Lane which leads to Sprotbrough. After descending into the gorge and crossing the River Don, turn left into Nursery Lane where there is a riverside car park on the left. Follow the Trans Pennine Trail south westward along the bank of the River Don to reach the reserve.
