With Doncaster being home to the St Leger, the oldest classic horse race in the world, there is a strong sporting tradition in the borough. Doncaster Racecourse, having recently undergone major redevelopment work, provides over 30 days of top class racing throughout the year. Race days are a truly social occasion with ample time to savour good food and refreshments in addition to the racing action. Horse lovers should also try to visit the Northern Racing College which has taster days throughout the year. In addition to looking around the stables and seeing trainee jockeys in the making, visitors are also invited to try 'Mickey' the racehorse simulator, to test their own horse riding abilities.

Fitness enthusiasts will relish a visit to the Dome Leisure Centre. With a climbing wall, fitness village, squash courts, sports hall, 7 fun pools and flumes and a split level ice rink there's something for everyone to enjoy. If that hasn't tired you out, why not pay a visit to Bawtry Paintball & Laser Fields with its 100-acres of outdoor terrain and woodland providing thrills and spills galore.

Golfers will find 12 courses within the borough many of which are open to both members and non-members with very affordable green fees. Robin Hood Golf Club, Owston played host to the 2002 Europro Tour, demonstrating the continually improving standard of golf courses in the area.

Anglers are also well catered for in Doncaster and the sighting (November 2003) of salmon in the River Don is a welcome endorsement of the efforts being made to return the rivers and canals to a more natural habitat. There are numerous bridleways, cycling and walking routes in the Doncaster area, many covering scenic routes of spectacular natural beauty, such as the Don Gorge.

Hatfield Water Park offers canoeing, dinghy sailing, windsurfing, sub-aqua and coarse fishing as well as a superb climbing wall and aerial walkway. Many of Doncaster's sports clubs and societies encourage visitors with a shared appreciation of their sport and spectators are positively welcomed at the brand new Keepmoat Stadium home of Doncaster Rovers FC, Doncaster Lakers RLFC and Doncaster Belles WFC and Castle Park home of Doncaster RFC, the town's high flying rugby union side.
