The reserve, located alongside the River Don in the spectacular Don Gorge, comprises a large area of open water created by mining subsidence along with areas of broadleaved woodland and grassland which are particularly rich in plants. Bird life is prolific with over 60 regular breeding species. Several permissive and public footpaths give excellent access to the reserve and there are three viewing hides, two of which are available for wheel chair users. Food and drinks can be obtained from the Boat Inn public house adjacent to the car park.

Location
The reserve is accessed from Nursery Lane, Sprotbrough. From Warmsworth, leave the A630 on Mill Lane which leads to Sprotbrough. After descending into the gorge and crossing the River Don, turn left into Nursery Lane where there is a riverside car park on the left. Follow the Trans Pennine Trail south westward along the bank of the River Don to reach the reserve.

A 100 acre reserve with habitats ranging from wetlands to hay meadows and supporting a wide range of birds, insects and flowers. A good footpath takes visitors around the reserve and there are three viewing hides offering excellent opportunities to enjoy the wildlife.

Location
The reserve lies between Mexborough and High Melton. Access is from Pastures Road which links these two settlements. Travelling from Mexborough, leave the A6023 Doncaster Road turning left before the railway bridge on to Pastures Road. The reserve car park is on the right just before the road crosses the River Dearne.

The 200ha nature reserve with a wide range of habitats is only 2 miles from Doncaster but it feels like the heart of the countryside and supports large populations of birds, butterflies, dragonflies and other fauna and flora. Over 8km of footpaths, 5km of which are accessible to wheelchairs unassisted, and 12 viewing hides (10 suitable for the disabled) ensure visitors can take in the wildlife whilst enjoying a pleasant countryside walk. A brand new field centre opened in 2005 incorporating a small meeting room and a café offering hot and cold drinks, lunches, snacks and home made sweets.
